Accessibility Statement

This site exists to help disabled people and their families find services. It would be a poor effort if the site itself were not accessible. We take this seriously, and we want to hear from you if we have fallen short.

1. Our commitment

Byte Byte aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. We design and build with accessibility as a requirement rather than an afterthought, and we test as we go.

2. What we have done

• Semantic HTML structure with landmarks and a logical heading order, so screen readers can navigate the page.
• A “skip to main content” link on every page.
• Full keyboard operability, including a focus trap in the cookie dialog so keyboard focus cannot escape it.
• Visible focus indicators on interactive elements.
• Text and interface colours checked to meet or exceed the 4.5:1 contrast ratio required at AA.
• Text alternatives for meaningful images, and decorative images hidden from assistive technology.
• Form fields with associated labels, and errors reported in text rather than by colour alone.
• Responsive layouts that reflow without horizontal scrolling and support browser zoom.
• An accessible non-map route to every service: the service list, county pages, and individual service pages contain the same information as the map.

3. Known limitations

We would rather be honest about the gaps than claim perfection:

• The interactive map. It is supplied by Google Maps, and we do not control its internal accessibility. Panning and zooming may be difficult with a screen reader or by keyboard alone. If the map is hard to use, every service on it is also reachable through the All Services list and the county pages, which are built to be fully accessible.
• Third-party content. Where we link to external sites such as hse.ie or provider websites, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of those destinations.
• Underlying data. Some source data contains inconsistent formatting or abbreviations that may read awkwardly in a screen reader. We correct these as we find them.

4. Tell us if something does not work

If you hit an accessibility barrier on this site, please tell us. It is genuinely useful, and we will treat it as a bug to fix rather than a complaint to file.
